CẸ̀LẸ́: The African Devotion To His/Her Faith
In the heart of Nigeria, right through its rich cultures and traditions, you'll always stand a chance to encounter an intriguing sight that showcases a profound relationship between people and their faith.
The Celestial Church of Christ Nigeria (CCC Nigeria), affectionately known as "CẸ̀LẸ́" across the country and beyond, holds a unique place in the religious landscape of Nigeria, and recently, I had the chance to document one of their rounds of worship. It kind of have a remarkable glimpse into the soulful devotion that many Nigerians, like most of their counterparts in Africa, share towards their faith.
In these images, I've captured the essence of "Adura Aanu," a Yoruba phrase that translates to "prayers of mercy."
Individuals deep in prayer, their devotion apparent in every posture and gesture. From the suppliant ones who lay flat, to the ones with palms hung upwards and outstretched in humble surrender, to those who offer symbolic tokens, it's a mesmerizing sight to behold.
Looking at the images, I believe they evoke a fundamental truth: religion is an integral part of the African experience, touching every aspect of life. It's a spiritual bond that goes far beyond mere worship; it's an intrinsic part of one's identity here, no matter the one you choose to be affiliated with or ascribe to.
The devotion exemplified in these images exists in similar tone about diverse religious landscape of the continent. Africa is a place where multiple faiths endeavour to coexist, where Islam, Christianity, indigenous beliefs, and many more, show up to form a colorful weave of spirituality.
For many Nigerians, and indeed Africans, whether it's in the CẸ̀LẸ́ or any of the countless other religious communities across the continent, these photographs tell the story of a people whose lives are deeply intertwined with their faith.
The sheer fervor, surrender, and piety depicted in them underline the profound impact of faith on people's lives.
And while the specifics of religious practices may vary, the common thread is the enduring quest for spiritual connection and a profound yearning for answers.
